Cheaha Wilderness in Alabama is only a couple of hours from ATL and contains the highest mountain top in Alabama. Camp in Cheaha Wilderness State Park and then hike into the mountains for some great vistas and first rate solitude. The rock formations look like poured sea sand frozen in time for a million years. There’s also a put in on the Tallapoosa River near by for a quiet paddle along cow pastures. I encountered a lost calf in the river. Here’s the put in at 33.508695,-85.625124.
