While in SC I dropped in on the Pee Dee River at Staple Lake to paddle up a side creek and hike to a farm field to check out a ruin I spotted on Google Earth. When I made it to the field it was totally flooded. The ruin was submerged. There was a deer hunting stand that was the only high and dry ground around. The country roads were now canals of water and easy to paddle. Further up the creek I dropped in on Apple Orchard Slough to take a short cut paddle through the swamp back to the landing. The swamp water was high and I could get through until about 1/2 way when the creek split and the swamp woods got too thick to pass. I lost the creek trail. All sorts of 8-legged creatures were dropping from the trees into the boat. I had to turn back and slogged my way along the bank of a pine tree forest. It was a truly wild moment.
